Great Summer Fishing on Lake Winnie

Lake Winnibigoshish Walleye Fishing

Walleye fishing is strong throughout the summer months; however, May, June, September and October are phenomenal. Be sure to check for Pat's Fishing Report on this Web site to learn what tactics have been working and find out where the fish are biting. Lake Winnibigoshish has a walleye slot limit from 18 inches to 23 inches (where one fish can be kept over 23 inches). Despite an aggressive slot limit, our anglers often catch enough fish to have fish fries and many young anglers have the opportunity to catch a fair number of five pound and larger walleyes.

Think about a trip to Denny's Resort in October. You can enjoy fantastic fishing in the morning and a great afternoon looking for grouse throughout the Chippewa National Forest.

Northern Pike Fishing

Lake Winnie is an outstanding pike lake. Although the fish rarely exceed 15 pounds, if you're after them, you can find plenty of five to ten pound fish. There is a pike slot limit from 22 inches to 26 inches (where two fish can be kept over 26 inches) AND the northern pike limit is now 10 fish. Also, the pike from this lake are much better eating than many other lakes throughout the state. The colder, clean water makes a big difference in the quality of the pike meat.

Musky Fishing

Honestly, we don't see a lot of musky fishermen. But, we do see muskies. Lake Winnie is not a Leech Lake musky fishery by any means; however, we wouldn't discourage anyone that wanted to try for them. In fact, we would be glad to offer any assistance you require.

Perch & Panfish Fishing

Perch are about the only panfish one can commonly find on Lake Winnie. They are plentiful and they are large. In our opinion, Lake Winnie is the best lake in the state to catch truly jumbo perch. They bite year-round and all day long. Perch can be a great target for kids when the other game fish aren't biting so well.

Area Lakes (near to Lake Winnie)

There are several lakes nearby if Lake Winnie is too wind-blown to fish or if you just wish to explore. We would recommend the following: Cutfoot Sioux Lake (walleyes, crappies, sunfish), Six Mile Lake (very remote, crappies, walleye) and Portage Lake (crappies, sunfish, walleyes, pike).

Area Rivers (near to Lake Winnie)

The Mississippi River up by the Winnibigoshish Dam offers excellent walleye fishing throughout the fall. Also, the Third River accesss to Lake Winnie (on the Northwest side) offers excellent fishing and beautiful, golden-colored walleyes throughout the summer and fall.
